Although the number of cases in Chile has been relatively low compared with the UK, the medical facilities to deal with such cases are also very limited. Greater Santiago will be putting some six million residents in quarantine from Friday 16 May. Stocks of test kits have run out and it is reported that people have died of Covid-19 due to lack of ventilators.
The effect of restrictions is hitting the poorest very hard. Miguel Pérez writes:
“The situation in Chile is very bad, critical and difficult in the church, for two months now without worship and without income. Many brothers have lost their jobs and we no longer have a way to help. We urgently need to help ten families where they have children and we need to feed them. We need to raise at least £50 for each family.“
